Hambleton & District League Champions 2010
Tonight at Thirsk's Racecourse ground, Marton Under 12's completed a fantastic first season in the
Hambleton & District League by beating Easinwold by 88 runs to win the North v South league play-off final.
Having won the toss Marton decided to bowl first and what an inspired decision it proved. Bowlers Clark and Hiser had Easingwold on the back-foot leaving the openers Summersgill and Hudson to return to the pavillion with only 11 runs for the loss of one wicket to Clark after 4 overs. Baker and Jackson were next to bat and suffered a horrendous 4 overs as the marton attack set about them. Welburn, Lowe and clark took a wicket each and Hiser two as they finished their batting with a return of 5 runs for 5 wickets. Marton's performance in the field was thoroughly professional whilst umpiring, I took a delight in watching events un-fold close -up. Clark took a further wicket as did Kirby and Hussain a fine 3 for 7 before Easingwold closed their innings on 264 for 12

Talk in the Marton changing room at half-time was centered around batting sensibly. The game was Marton's to lose and theoretically we could have all gone out to bat and scored 0 n.o. and still won! however, after congratulating them on a fine fielding performance, Marton's batsmen were sent out with one clear instruction.... bat sensibly and don't throw your wicket away.
Kirby and Lowe got off to a worrying start as Lowe was clean bowled first over aiming for 'cow corner', however they steadied the inning by putting on18 runs without further loss of wicket, kirby finishing with 8 no and lowe on 10. Walsh and Hiser were next to the crease and both batted very sensibly to add 18 no, Walsh scoring 16 and Hiser 2. Savage and Welburn came out promising some steady batting, indeed Welburn said he would be crabbing for the entire 4 overs! Both batted very professionally and put on9 runs for the loss of 1 wicket, Savage trapped LBW. A decision I gave reluctantly after consultation with the square leg umpire. Hussain and Clark wrapped -up the Marton innings by adding 24 runs for the loss of only one wicket, Husain being bowled by a 'jaffa' by Crosgrove, a ball that swung a mile.
Marton finished on 280 for 3

In the presentation ceremony afterwards, Pat Ruecroft the League Secretary congratulated Marton on a fine performance and cited the performances of Hiser Hussain and Walsh before naming Faizan Hussain as the player of the final and presenting him with a man of the match award.
A thoroughly deserved result which was a reward for a season of great cricket...well done Marton, now for the Sillar's shield!
