Marton keep pressure on Saltburn with one game to play

Marton today kept the pressure on Saltburn, with one game each remaining, they beat Stokesley handsomely by 109 runs.
next week Saltburn are at home to Thornaby whilst we are away to Guisborough with only 1 point separating the two sides before today's fixtures.Captain Kirby again won the toss and elected to bowl first putting Stokesley into bat on a damp wicket.Openers Brown and Bryant batted well for them putting on9 runs before Clark removed Brown's middle stump and then Bryant's off-stump leaving Stokesley on 9 for 2 at the end of 4 overs. Honeymoon and Atkinson were next to the crease and contributed another 11 runs before Walsh stumped honeymoon off the bowling of Kirby, after 8 overs Stokesley were struggling on 19 for 3. R.Atkinson and Van Morgan batted next and struggled to score runs against the tight bowling attack of Lowe and Welburn, Walsh again taking a smart stumping removing Van Morgans bails off the bowling of Lowe. Bannergee and D. Van Morgan also had difficulty pushing the
score on adding only another 7 runs before Van Morgan was bowled by Joe Savage. Last pair Robinson and Preece salvaged some late pride by contributing 26 runs off the last four overs before having Preece run out by Walsh after a superb diving stop on the boundary by Waj Ali leaving Stokesley on 259 for 6, (211 net).
Marton's openers Lowe and Kirby got Marton off to a cracking start hitting 36 without loss off the first 4 overs, Kirby knocking an impressive 28 no, whilst Lowe added 6 no.Hiser and Clark were next to bat and scored 14 runs. losing only Clark caught off the Bowling of Honeyman for 11. Ali and Welburn batted with increasing confidence, contributing 11 without loss taking Marton to 61 for 1 after 12 overs. Savage and Hussain punished the Stokesley bowlers further knocking 26 runs off the next 4 overs, with Savage in particular batting well to score 20 before being bowled by Van Morgan, Hussain adding 6 runs no. Walsh and Kennedy were last to bat and agin went through their 4 overs without loss, Walsh scoring 8 and the ever-improving Kennedy 5 to take Marton home on 336 for 2.

Marton close the gap as Saltburn get rained-off
Marton today played superbly, to close the Gap on Saltburn to just one point as their game with Normanby Hall was postponed.Credit to Miggy and the groundstaff for getting the game on after the torrential rain of Yesterday. I went down to the ground at 7.45am today and Miggy was busy mowing the crease, determined to get the game on for us.And a good decision it proved as Captain KIrby again won the toss and put Billingham into bat on a wet wicket. However, there were worried looks on Marton's faces as Smith and Travers whacked 37 off the first 3 overs before Walsh smartly stumped smith twice off the bowling of Kirby and Hussain. to restore some calm before Tonks and Glen came into bat. From this point onwards Billingham continued to struggle, conceding regular wickets as their innings progressed. Notable Bowling performances came from Alex Pyne who was on a hat-trick at one stage, but still finished with 3 for 10 in 2 overs.Fezzain Hussain bag another pair for 5 off 3 overs and Kirby and Savage one wicket each before Billingham finished on
Billingham 285 for 7 229 (net)
Marton again faced going into bat for a second week with only one instruction...bat sensibly! and this time they did. Openers Lowe and Kirby batted superbly knocking off 34 runs in their 4 overs before Lowe was run out going for a quick single.Alex Pyne and Liam Kennedy where net to bat and suffered a nervous few overs after Pyne was caught first ball and then conspired to get run out attempting a quick single. Alex soon banished his demons though and scored a handy 7 including a 4 before the pair departed Kennedy adding 1 run before returning to the pavillion.Hussain and Hiser steadied the ship by notching up 24 runs in their stand, including a sprinkling of 4's from both of them, Hiser getting 6 no and Hussain 18 no. Next tot the crease were Waj Ali and Liam Clark and they performed superbly hitting 28 runs unbeaten, with Clark's 23 no the highlight of the partnership. Last to bat were Walsh and Savage, who guided Marton home with an unbeaten 33, Walsh hitting 27 no including 2 sixes and Savage 6 no. Marton finished on

Hat-trick hero Kirby inspires Marton to victory
Marton today played superbly in the field to defeat an unbeaten Middlesbrough at Acklam. After yet again winning the toss...(I must take you to the Casinos with me when your 18 Scott!) Marton elected to bowl on a wicket which looked dreadful, full of cracks and green patches it promised to move the ball around and it didn't disappoint. In the first over Walsh stumped Batiste off the bowling of kirby and so began the downfall. Each bowler in turn 'filled their boots' as Middlesbrough pressed the self destruct button. Faizan Hussain followed with 2 wickets off his 3 overs as did Liam Clark.... more about him later! Matthew Hiser and nathan Welburn each added a wicket each before Lowe and Kennedy began their spells. In Jordan's first over he took 2 wickets in quick succession to set up a hat-trick which was prevented by a leg glance by Matthews.
Liam Kennedy who gets better with each game then took 2 for 2 in his 2 overs before the last over from kirby which produced the real fireworks!
First ball he had Pennington stumped by Walsh. He then had Palmer Caught and bowled, memories of Stuart Broad at Tent bridge came flooding back as an aggressive field was set for the hat trick ball. A beautiful leg-spinner came down, beating the bat of Pennington andante the gloves of Walsh who stumped the Middlebrough captain with ease to set off huge celebrations.Oh and Liam Clark , or is it Clark Kent aka Superman, after his flying one-handed catch...he disguised himself by wearing glasses too!
Middlesbrough 291 for 16....yes 16! ( 163 net)
All Marton had to do was go out and block the Boro bowlers and not make silly mistakes....well that was the theory. openers kirby and lowe got us off to a flying start by scoring 57 for the loss of only one wicket. Captain Kirby scoring an imperious 37 no including 2 huge sixes. Jordan Lowe scored an equally entertaining 27 including a lovely six which sent spectators running in all directions in the pavilion. Clark and Welburn were next to the crease and added a useful16 before they were both bowled by Akram who swung the ball beautifully to 'york' each batsman.Walsh and Hussain came to the crease next and then things came off the rails a bit! Hussain was caught behind first ball paddle sweeping the bowler and getting a top edge. Next over he and Walsh got in a terrible mess as Hussain called for a tight run and was sent back by Walsh, getting run out in the process. Whether there was a run or not is debatable, we really didn't need to take risks, which was my message to all in the changing room. Hussain then got himself caught out at Mid-off before the pair retired having posted 20 runs for the loss of 3 wickets.Kennedy and Ali were next to bat and batted well putting on10 runs including a lovely 4 from Ali.Both batsmen were bowled however before Savage and Hiser came to the crease as the last pair. Nineteen runs were added by the pair before they were both bowled to leave
Marton on 360 for 10 (280 net) Marton won by 117 runs
Magnificent Marton breeze past Marske
Marton today played as well as they ever have done at Marske's Windy Hill Lane to beat a depleted Marske by a huge 146 run margin. On a gloriously sunny day that was made for cricket, Captain Kirby again won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like the best wicket we have played on all season.Opening pair Kirby and Lowe set about the Marske attack from the onset and amassed 34 runs without loss after 4 overs. Lowe hitting 5 fours on the way to a superb 24 no and Kirby 10 no.
Batsman of the moment Joe Savage was next to the crease, partnered by the promising Liam Kennedy, and the runs continued to flow, Savage stroked the ball to all parts of the ground on the way to his 35 runs, which include 6 fours, before he was smartly stumped.Liam kennedy contributed a confident 5 runs as well to take Marton to 74 for 1 after 8 overs! The decision to bat first looked even more commendable, when Fez Hussain and Liam Clark batted, Hussain added 24 runs including 3 fours, whilst Clark notched up 6 to move Marton onto 104 for 1 wicket.
Scorers nervously noticed that we were running out of space on the score card as Welburn and Ali came out to bat, this was a perfect opportunity for these batsmen to gain some confidence as well as runs and they didn't disappoint. The pair added another 16 runs without loss before Walsh and Hiser came out to bat as the last pair. 120 for one was a great score but with 4 overs remaining Marton looked to create a record score.Walsh and Hiser stroked the ball around with ease adding a further 33 runs, Walsh scoring a cracking 27 no, including 5 fours and Hiser 6 before a 'rush of blood' allowed Hiser to be bowled.
Marton 375 for 2 (359 net)
Marske's task was an ominous one and always looked unlikely, particularly after some crazy indecision led to Peggs being run out without scoring. Marske's batsmen made a decent effort and scored regularly, but conceded wickets in the process. Given that their team was patched up with a number of Under 11's players, they did very well but were unable to reply to a determined Marton attack. Notable Bowling performances were the 2 wickets for 0 runs in 2 overs by Matthew Hiser, Joe Savage notching 2 for 7 in 2 overs and Jordan Lowe 1 wicket for 6 runs in 2 overs and Waj Ali's 1 wicket for 5 runs in 3 overs.
Marske 267 for 7 (213 net)
This was a pleasure to watch and should give us lots of confidence prior to the Game this Sunday at home to Great Ayton. The gap between us and Middlesbrough at The top of the tables now down to only 3 points and Boro have to play Saltburn yet!Let's keep this rich vein of form for the remainder of the season lads and we won't be far away from that title by the end of the season!

Gallant Marton fail to halt Saltburn
Marton today came within 9 runs of beating Saltburn in an excellent game which was a credit to both sides.Put into bat first, Marton's openers Kirby and Hussain started confidently and put together 15 without loss after the first 4 overs, Kirby scoring 8 no and Hussain 7 no. Walsh and Lowe were next to bat and scored well during their 4 overs,Walsh showing glimpses of last years batting adding 21 runs including a 6 off Jason Erskine and Lowe scored 2 before being smartly stumped by Tom Chisholm and Walsh sadly getting bowled off the last ball.Matthew Hiser and Liam Clarke arrived at the crease with Marton on 40 for 2, but were pegged back by some excellent bowling from Corrigan and Howell who restricted the pair to only 3 runs during their 4 overs both however kept their wickets intact.Waj Ali and Nathan Welburn batted next and kept the momentum going adding 10 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket Welburn smartly caught off the bowling of Howell.
With 4 overs remaining Joe Savage and Liam Kennedy came to the crease faced with the daunting task of batting against Ben Ainsley and Alex Jones. Both Joe and Liam batted very well defending their wickets like the last stand at the Alamo, with only savage being bowled by a 'Jaffa' from Ainsley.
Marton 264 for 4 (232 net)
Saltburn came into bat and were immediately put under pressure by the Marton attack when Jones was trapped LBW by Hiser in the first over, Next ball Sill drove straight into the hands of Clarke to leave Saltburn reeling at 4 for 2. Hiser unfortunately missed out on a hat-trick, but then returned 3 overs with 2 wickets for 2 runs.Sill was then bowled before the end of the 4th over by Clark knocking back his middle stump.Erskine and Thompson were next to the crease and the pair put on a credible 29 runs, with Erskine smartly stumped by Walsh and Thompson bowled by Welburn.Saltburn were beginning to reel a little when Deluce and Parry came to the crease, but they kept their heads and their wickets to return to the pavillion adding 8 runs after their 4 overs. Howell and Corrigan added only 2 runs before Ainsley and Chisholm came out to bat requiring 20 runs off the last 4 overs for victory.Inevitably they did, despite Kirby and Hussains best efforts to restrict them the last pair added 25 leaving Saltburn on
Saltburn 281 for 5 (241 net) Saltburn win by 9 runs
two out of two wins for under 13's
Marton finished the week with two wins out of two, by beating Thornaby in convincing style by 86 runs today, following on from an excellent win against Stokesley in the Goldsborough cup on Monday evening by an impressive 88 runs which meant that we progressed to the semi finals against Saltburn.Scott kirby once again won the toss and put Thornaby into bat first where they struggled to score runs against a tight Marton bowling attack. Clark, Lowe and Hussain bagged 2 wickets each with Hiser getting one by having Spaxman stumped by Walsh. eventually Thornaby returned to the pavillion having accumulated 256 for the
loss of 7 wickets (200 net).
Batting -wise this was an opportunity for the players to improve their averages, and some set about the task in style. Opening Pair Kiby and Hussain scored 28 runs before Hussain went for 'cow corner' and was clean bowled. Walsh and Lowe performed well and scored an additional 26 runs without loss, Lowe in particular looked impressive scoring 20 no. Clark and Hiser added 10 runs before Clark was apparently caught behind to a fine catch by first slip.Batsman of the day however was once again Joe Savage who notched up a fine 22 no out to take his batting average to 43 from 4 innings this season.Kennedy added a fine 6 no and Welburn 2 no before Ali added 13 before losing his wicket 3 times in the process.
Overal a good professional performance by a team which looks like it has 'clicked' after the first 2 games, when they were beaten by Normanby and Billingham. Now for Maltby next week.

League begins with a comfortable win
Marton started the league season in confident fashion today by beating Normanby Hall by 45 runs. Captain kirby again won the toss and put Normanby in to bat on a beautifully prepared wicket by Miggy under a little bit of cloud cover. Kenworthy and Dodgson opened and batted confidently rattling up 6 runs without loss for the first 4 overs. Next in were I. Ramsey and L. Crosby who fared rather less well. Kirby took 3 wickets in his spell having Ramsey firstly stumped by Walsh, before bowling crosby and then having the unfortunate Ramsey caught smartly by Kennedy. Crosby was then dismissed by Hussain as Normanby's second pair left having contributed 4 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 4 overs! Towie and Wazim were next to bat and struggled against the bowling of Ali who took 2 wickets including a superb caught and bowled to dismiss Wazim. Before the Normnby Hall innings was concluded Walsh ran our J.Ramsey and The impressive Liam kennedy took 2 wickets for 5 runs in his 2 overs at the crease.
Normanby Hall 275 for 9 ( 203 net)
Coaches Kirby and Walsh decided that with little to lose they would give some of the other lads a chance to bat early and put in Hussain and Clark as openers who responded by scoring 12 runs off their 4 overs for the loss of only 1 wicket, Hussain being stumped for 10 runs. Welburn and Ali were the next pair to bat and started nervously.Welburn was desperately unfortunate to be caught behind when the ball was edged and landed in the top of the keepers pads! next over he fell LBW to a good delivery from Ramsey, which left him distraught. After composing himself, Nathan added a useful 6 runs before him and Ali returned to the pavillion. Youngsters, Kennedy and Craven came into bat and looked like they had been playing at this level for years. Craven notched 6 runs and Kennedy and unbeaten 1 before Craven was caught driving to mid-wicket.
Walsh and Hiser then added a bit of stability to the proceedings scoring 13 without loss including 2 lovely 4's from each of them before the last pair of Kirby and Savage stepped out to bat. Now I don't know what you fed Joe for breakfast today Mrs Savage, but I would make it a regular event on Sunday mornings if i were you!... Joe struck everything in his vicinity with the middle of the bat as he scored a lovely 18 no including 3 4's as he and Kirby ( 10 no) closed the innings in style to leave Marton on
Marton 280 for 4 (248 net) Marton won by 45 runs
Great result boys and a perfect start to the league campaign.Only one blemish on the performance, 30 extras! we need to cut this out before we play Stokesley tomorrow night as victory would see us through to the Semis of the cup!

Second defeat in a row, as Marton lose to Normanby Hall.
Marton suffered their second defeat in a row today when they lost a tightly contested game away to Normanby Hall.
Put into bat by Normanby, Marton struggled to score runs on a tricky wicket with some vary variable bounce. Kirby and Walsh opened and started to score at 3 an over until Kirby was bowled by an absolute 'jaffa' for 5. Alex Pine was next to bat and went for 0 when caught by Monaghan. James Craven defended valiantly for a while but again went without scoring, before It was left to Jordan Lowe to come in and steady the ship with Walsh scoring a fine 20 containing 4 fours which took the total to 52 before he was caught going for the boundary again by Ramsey. The stubborn Walsh having earlier for been bowled for 10 by Leach.
The relief was only temporary though as Clark fell first ball LBW to Leach putting Leach on a hat-trick. Welburn saw off the hat-trick ball and went on to score 9 before he went LBW to to Billal, followed shortly after by Savage and Kennedy who both fell cheaply for 0 before Waj Ali struck a lovely 4 before again being LBW for 5 leaving Marton with a measly 68 to defend.
Normanby came into bat and where immediately put under pressure by Marton when they lost Kenworthy for 4 caught well by Liam Kennedy playing in his first game for the Under 13's off the bowling of Clark. They continued to score slowly and after 6 overs had only accumulated 16 runs. Then the wheels started to fall off for Marton as they gave away far too many runs with extras allowing Normanby to progress to 63 with 3 overs remaining. Along the way,Kirby picked up 2 wickets as did Pine and Welburn. By the time we reached the 19th over, Normanby required 3 runs, which came off the first ball of Lowe's over leaving Marton to once again lick their wounds.
Cold analysis of the game shows that this should have been a game that Marton could have won but the simple truth is that far too many extras were conceeded. Normanby's batsmen actually only scored 34 runs! 35 runs came from extras...something which has to be addressed before we face Guisborough at home next Sunday.

Black Sunday as unbeaten run ends!
Marton v Billingham Synthonia Goldsborough Cup, Sunday May 1st, 9:30 am
Marton's unbeaten run extending over a year ended in heartbreaking fashion today when they lost the first Goldsborough Cup game away to Billingham by the narrowest of margins..1 run!
Marton again won the toss, and put Billingham into bat and bowled well restricting Billingham to 32 after ten overs for the loss of one wicket, Travers being smartly stumped by Walsh for 2. However, as the game continued,Smith hit a fine 33 no and J. Burdon 19 no as Billingham progressed to a total of 77 for the loss of 3 wickets,Tonks run out by Walsh for 0 and Wing bowled for 5 by Lowe. In truth the excellent fielding we witnessed at home to Normanby Hall last week was noticeably absent as Marton allowed Billingham to score far too many runs through sloppy fielding.
Billingham 77 for 3
This wasn't a total to be intimidated by and Marton's Openers Kirby and Husain got us off to a cracking start and 42 runs were on the board before Kirby was caught out for 14 runs. everything looked promising until Billingham produced a very tight spell of bowling which restricted Marton with the bat. Interestingly, when Kirby departed Husain was on 23 no and it took him a further 6 overs to reach 31 no before he retired, which emphasises just how mean the oppositions bowling was. Walsh came to the crease next and batted steadily along with first Hussain and then Lowe who unluckily lost his wicket when he spun round to hit a ball and knocked his bails off with his hand! By the time Clark came to the crease, Marton needed 10 off the last over. One's and two's were scrambled, but with one ball remaining, 6 was needed to win. Walsh galloped down the crease and swung the bat driving the ball high and long toward the boundary, disappointment ensued however, as the ball dropped about a metre inside the rope for 4 runs.
Marton 75 for 2
A very disappointing end to the game which we really should have won However, perhaps this was a jolt to the system we needed as in some games we have begun to get a little complacent and this will serve as a timely reminder that at this level there are no easy games.Next week we are at home to Stokesley, which will be a tough game but one were we need to remind people just how good we can be.

Marton v Normanby Hall
friendly fixture Wednesday 13th April 2011.
Well it was meant to be a friendly fixture, intended to blow the winter cobwebs away. Well the Baltic gales blowing around Cricket Lane certainly contributed! Marton won the toss and elected to bowl at Normanby on a very dodgy start of season wicket that had cracks so big Geoff Boycott would have lost his car keys had he tried to probe the wicket. However, Fez and Liam opened the attack and soon had Normanby reeling with a wicket in the second over, Ingledew bowled by Hussain for 1. Nathan Welburn come on later and added the wicket of Baige for 0 after Matthew Hiser (or was it Ricky Ponting) superbly ran out Kenworthy with a throw, with only one stump to aim at. Monaghan held Normanby's innings together contributing a fine 23 before being caught and bowled by Kirby. Keeper Walsh made a smart stumping to remove Leech for a fine 10 runs off the bowling of Hiser, before Kirby removed another 3 wickets leaving Normanby on 74 at the end of their allotted 20 overs.
Cobwebs of 'Hammer House of Horror' proportions were evident when Marton
batted, with Kirby and Walsh struggling to score runs off an unpredictable wicket before both lost their wickets for 2 runs apiece, both being bowled. Matthew Hiser was next to the crease and soon departed again, bowled thanks to the wicket for 0.It was left to Hussain and Clark (without an e) to steady the innings and take Marton to 70 without further loss of wicket, Hussain retiring on a fantastic 32 no. Welburn was next to be bowled for 0 before Clark and Savage took Marton home with 7.5 overs remaining.
Many Thanks to all who turned up tonight, It was very useful to have some match practice before the season starts .... lots of batting practice during Friday's training I suspect, but some very encouraging bowling and fielding skills on show.
see you Friday night!
